In complete disclosure, in the past, I didn’t make it a priority to set writing goals. I always just played it by ear and got out however many words I could fit in the time I had. But now? Heck, yes, I set writing goals. Because I don’t have a million hours in the day, I have to be super real about what I actually want for my career and influence.
And let’s be real, writers. The landscape of the industry is not what it used to be. We’ve got way more on our plate in terms of marketing, and there are a lot of people out there telling you what you “have” to do (that BTW might not align with your values or circumstances). Unless you are specific about where you want to go, it’s all too easy to let your energy get so diffused you don’t build a solid audience at all.
So, I have to lay it out now, and so do most other writers, too. But the biggest reason of them all to start setting goals is that it gives you clarity on why you’re even at the keyboard. The industry is harsh enough — you need to know why you’re in it and what you’re aiming for if you expect to be successful. If you can answer “Why am I doing this?!”, the job is way less scary.
